It is my distinct pleasure to extend warm greetings to Jamaicans and friends of Jamaica, as we celebrate another significant milestone-the 54th Anniversary of Independence of our beloved homeland, Jamaica.

As a nation, we have made significant progress particularly in achieving and in some instances surpassing economic targets and social indicators. While we still have formidable challenges, the sheer unbridled tenacity of Jamaicans at home coupled with the enduring commitment and support of Jamaicans abroad, have enabled us to remain on course for unprecedented growth and development this year.

As we acknowledge the much needed contributions, I must also express my profound appreciation to the many Jamaicans throughout the Diaspora who have and continue to give back to our homeland. You are indeed key partners in Jamaica’s development process. As we press forward, we must remain steadfast and committed to the task of nation building, in the assurance that our individual and collective efforts will propel us forward. Sustaining these achievements will require the concentrated effort of the entire Jamaican family and we must seize the moment. This is our time.

Even as we note the positive changes in Jamaica, we can be justly proud of the enormous strides which have been made in the Diaspora by individuals and groups. This is evident in the issuance of academic scholarships, the building of capacity, the creation of social safety nets and effective networks amongst the youth and adult community alike. These activities have contributed significantly to the development of the Diaspora which also indirectly, redounds to the benefit of Jamaica. Although our resources are limited, we have achieved much, underpinned for the most part by the ‘One Love’ which we share.

We have a tremendous legacy which is encapsulated in our rich history and heritage but this is rarely celebrated. Today, as we pay tribute to our forebears for their role in obtaining independence, let us be mindful of our more recent achievements in sports, music, the arts, academia and politics. We must also acknowledge our creative, innovative and resourceful qualities which have set us apart as a people. Our ability to smile in the face of adversity and say “no problem” underlines our resilience and this is only equaled by our vibrant and infectious spirit. We must honour our people, the real architects of Brand Jamaica, the same brand that enabled Usain Bolt to take it “to the world.”

Our country is at a good place, poised to rise to new dimensions in our development trajectory.  It is therefore fitting that on the occasion of our Independence, we celebrate under the theme, “Let’s Get Together and Feel Alright”.  Together we are strong and this unity has been the driving force behind Jamaica’s development. With this in mind, let us re-kindle our resolve to press on with renewed faith in God.  Let us continue to raise our prayer: “Eternal Father, bless our Land.  Guide us with Thy mighty hand.”

HAPPY INDEPENDENCE AND GOD BLESS JAMAICA, LAND WE LOVE.
