


2017 Election for Diaspora Advisory Board Member
Welcome to the election site for the Diaspora Advisory Board Member and Advisory Board Member Canada. The term of office for each is two years. Please note that all positions are voluntary and the elected persons will not receive financial compensation except with the approval of members of Jamaica Diaspora Canada. Please see below for information on the responsibilities and criteria for each position as well as details on the nomination process.
Position Terms, Responsibilities & Criteria
Advisory Board Member AND Alternate
Term of Office
The term of office is for a period of two (2) years. The position is voluntary and the persons will not receive financial compensation.
Role and Responsibilities
The Board Member will be required to:
- • Represent the interest of the Jamaican Diaspora that resides in Canada to the Minister responsible for Diaspora Affairs in the Government of Jamaica.
• Be knowledgeable about the Diaspora – strengths and needs.
• Maintain a close working relationship with the Consulate General of Jamaica in Toronto, High Commission in Ottawa and Consular offices across Canada.
• Be a focal point for the receipt and dissemination of information that would be relevant to the Jamaican Diaspora, on a timely basis.
• Organize the Jamaican Diaspora to participate in all meetings relevant to the Diaspora including the biennial Jamaica Diaspora Conference in Jamaica.
• To attend Advisory Board Member meetings and be prepared to initiate creative efforts for the well-being and development of the Diaspora throughout Canada.
• Develop and execute financial self-sufficiency with the assistance and contribution of JDC.
Criteria for Elected Diaspora Advisory Board Member AND Alternate:

• Be Jamaican or of Jamaican heritage or be eligible to hold Jamaican citizenship.
• Be of legal age.
• Be a resident of Canada.
• Be honorable, trustworthy, and of good moral standing within the community.
• Have sound leadership qualities and organizational skills.
• Have good oral and written communication skills.
• Have no criminal record.
• Knowledge and understanding of social, political and economic issues in Canada and Jamaica.
• Record of active participation within the Diaspora community.
• Be able to finance traveling to Jamaica and across Canada with the assistance and support of JDC.
Nomination and Election Process
Application:
Persons interested in being considered for the position of advisory board member must adhere to the following:
- Submit the following as a part of complete application:
- • Brief outline (up to 500 words) indicating the reasons for your interest in being elected to the position
• Recent official photograph
• Completed Personal Character Fitness Questionnaire (download here)
• Character Reference Questionnaire (download here) completed by a personal reference - Applications and accompanying information must be delivered by applicants to Jamaican Consulate Toronto and Jamaican High Commission in Ottawa and Consular offices across Canada or by regular mail to Jamaican Consulate Toronto and Jamaican High Commission in Ottawa and Consular offices across Canada, no later than 11:59pm EST on Monday, June 12, 2017 to be eligible for consideration.
- The list of candidates will be circulated electronically at www.JDCANADA.org and at designated locations with further information on candidates and the voting process. The person securing the majority of votes will be declared the elected Diaspora Advisory Board Member; the runner up will be declared the Diaspora Advisory Board Member Alternate.
Elections:

• Given the wide geographical area of Canada, voting will be conducted electronically and via paper ballot.
• Eligibility to vote: Persons wishing to vote must be residents of Canada.
Once the candidates are announced, the elections will be conducted on the following basis:

1. A voting survey and paper ballot will be made available at www.JDSCANADA.org
2. Voting will be limited to one submission per person (paper or electronic, restricted by device/IP address and/or personal information).
3. Persons wishing to vote (via paper or electronic ballot) will be required to enter their name, mailing address, and email address.
4. Online voting will end on June 7, 2017 at 11:59pm EST.
5. Paper ballots must be received by June 28, 2017 at 11:59pm EST at the following address: Jamaican Consulate Toronto and Jamaican High Commission in Ottawa and Consular offices across Canada
6. The person securing the majority of votes will be declared the elected Diaspora Advisory Board Member and the person securing the second most votes will be declared the elected Alternate Advisory Board Member.
7. The elected Diaspora Advisory Board Member and Alternate will be announced electronically through the website as well as via other forms of media.
8. Oversight of the process and verification of the results will be supervised by the Nomination Team.
